Bhubaneswar, Nov 5: Saina Salonika of Orissa bagged a bronze medal in the U-12 girls’ event of the World Youth Chess Championships which was played at the Porto Carros Grand Resort, Halkidiki Islands in Greece, October 24- November 5.
Saina remained unbeaten in 11-round competition winning six games and drawing five. She ended with 8.5 points out of a possible 11 to finish third. Salimova Nurguel of Belgium clinched the gold medal, while Yip Carissa won the silver.
This is Saina’s third medal in the World Youth Championships and 11th in international events. Earlier she had won bronze in the U-8 girls’ category of the World Youth Chess Championship at Caldas Novas, Brazil in 2011 and gold in the U-10 girls’ segment of the World Youth Championship at All Ain, UAE in 2013.
With her third place finish, Saina bagged 66 ElO rating points and became the No. 1 player in the country in the U-12 girls’ category.
MPS triumph
Mother’s Public School (MPS) emerged champions of the CBSE Cluster-II basketball meet after scraping past St Xavier’s School, Hazaribagh 44-40 at Bokaro. Anurag Panda of MPS was adjudged the ‘most valuable player of the tournament’.
Date extended
The registration date of the State Shooting Championships here has been extended from November 5 to 10. The first two days of the competition (Nov 12-13) will be conducted at the Kalinga Stadium Shooting Range, while the second two days (Nov 14-15) will be played at the Utkal Karate School.
Great opportunity
Orissa archer Ranjit Nayak will train in South Korea, according to a release issued Thursday by the Archery Association of Orissa (AAO). “Ranjit will depart for South Korea from here, November 17,” stated AAO secretary Sradhananda Das. “Ranjit has been included in the TOP scheme for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. The training is to provide him exposure,” Sradhananda added.
