From high-profile deaths and natural calamities, to discussions about celebrity marriages, hashtags have become an indispensible social media tool for users to engage in mass conversations online. The use of hashtags is nothing new. The symbol itself came into existence in 14th century. However, it wasn’t termed as hashtag until it became popular on social media platforms. Its usage as a way of finding posts of a particular topic began in 2007. From there, hashtags have come a long way to becoming the most popular online tool that it is today.
Orissa POST takes a look at the hashtags that dominated social media feeds in 2018.

#Section377
In a landmark judgment for the LGBT community in the country, the Supreme Court lifted a colonial-era ban on gay sex in its September 6 verdict. A five-judge constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had reserved its verdict on July 17 after hearing various stakeholders for four days, including gay rights activists. Besides the CJI, the bench also comprised justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra. Underlining the supremacy of “constitutional morality” over “societal morality”, the Supreme Court had scrapped a 158-year-old British-era law that banned same-sex relations between consenting adults in private and punished them with jail terms for life or up to ten years. After this verdict, all social media platforms were sent into frenzy as the LGBT community and general public hailed the watershed moment in the nation’s advancement towards modern ethos.
