Brazil is the country with the largest number of species of snakes in the world. But do you know that there is a country in the world where there are no snakes?
You read it right. Ireland is one country completely devoid of snakes.
Before that, let us know some interesting things about this place. The earliest evidence of human presence in Ireland is dated at 10,500 BCE (12,500 years ago).
The country is steeped in some of history’s greatest ever moments and its cultural significance is immense around the globe.
But it still does not explain why snakes are not found anywhere in Ireland? According to ancient Irish myths, a saint named St. Patrick surrounded the snakes and threw them out of the island and into the sea. He accomplished this feat by staying hungry for 40 days.
However, scientists believe that snakes were never there in Ireland to begin with. There is no record in the Irish Department of Fossil that snakes were ever present in the country.
It is also believed that earlier snakes were found in the woods or rivers and creeks, but they became extinct due to the extreme cold conditions. Since then it has been assumed that snakes are not found here due to the cold.
