Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar Monday following the death of a one-year-old child, which locals alleged was caused by medical negligence and wrong medication.
The incident triggered a road blockade on the stretch leading to the airport, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.
According to a source, the family from Salia Sahi had brought the child to the hospital around 3 am after his condition worsened. Relatives claimed that the treatment prescribed by the duty doctor led to the death.

The family alleged that when they first visited the hospital Sunday afternoon, the doctor advised them to return the next day for an echocardiogram. As the child’s condition deteriorated, they rushed back at night, but the mother said the doctor was asleep and had delayed attending to the patient. She further claimed that when they sought admission, hospital staff refused citing unavailability of beds and asked them to return Monday afternoon.
The child’s death sparked outrage, with locals entering the hospital premises and blocking the road leading to the airport.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced Rs 4 lakh ex gratia for the bereaved family and conveyed his condolences. Hospital authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
