Bhubaneswar, March 23: Hardcore fans of computer games got an opportunity to put their skills to the test at a two-day gaming meet called Extreme Gaming League at King’s Palace of KIIT University.
A total of 26 teams comprising 130 enthusiastic gamers from the university participated in the third such edition of the championship that began Saturday and ended Sunday evening. The teams played Counter Strike 1.6, the famous shooting game that has been a rage with youngsters ever since it was introduced over a decade back.
Organised by final year students of KIIT, the event is being held every year since 2013. The championship this year had six rounds, with teams needing to cross 13 levels in order to qualify for the semifinals.
Team Legit comprising Navanil Sengupta (2nd yr CSE), Nilav Nayan (2nd yr CSE), Rajdeep Paul(1st yr Mech), Nilashis Roy (2nd yr Civil), and Abhinav Ray Chaudhury (1st yr M Tech) were the winners of the championship whereas team Geek Gaming with Arvind Bharadwaj (4th yr EEE), Avinash Sarma (4th yr EEE), Kaushik Sen Deka (4th yr ELEC), Suraj Das (4th yr Mech), and Nischal Das (4th yr Mech) was adjudged runner’s up.
The winning team received a cash prize of `3,000 while the runners-up team won a cash prize
of `2,000.
Counter Strike is a hugely popular first-person shooting game that was initially released in 1999. The game spawned a franchise and several remakes and has till date sold more than 25 million units across the world.
