Bangalore, Dec 28: Gujarat won the Vijay Hazare Trophy here Monday trouncing Delhi by 139 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here Monday. The summit clash was dominated by two Gujarat veterans. Parthiv Patel (105, 119b, 10×4) set the tone of the game with a brilliant century while another old-timer Rudra Pratap Singh (4/42) scripted Delhi’s downfall when the side from the north chased a winning target of 274.
Delhi will surely rue their decision to send the opposition in as the condition of the pitch deteriorated as the game progressed. Gujarat did not start well and were 44 for two before Patel in association with Rujul Bhat (60, 74b, 4×4, 1×6) put on 149 runs for the third wicket to take their team to a position of strength. Both however, were dismissed with the score on 193 within the space of five deliveries.
After their departure, Chirag Gandhi (44, 39b, 4×4) took it upon himself to take his team close to the 275-run mark with some judicious strokeplay. Subodh Bhati (2/43) and Pawan Negi (2/36) were the most successful Delhi bowlers.
When Delhi batted, Singh bowled with zest to send back Rishab Pant (0), Sikhar Dhawan (5) and Gautam Gambhir (9) in the first eight overs. From then on Delhi were always fighting a losing cause. The start given by Singh was fully utilised by Jaspreet Bumrah (5/28) and Delhi were bowled out for a paltry 134 in 32.3 overs. They managed to reach the three-figure mark because of Negi (57, 47b, 9×4, 1×6), who flayed his bat at the end.
