Rayagada: As many as three persons lost their lives in wall collapse following torrential rains in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts Saturday.
In the first incident, a couple was suffocated to death after a portion of their thatched muddy house wall caved in on them following incessant rain over the last couple of days at Sulipadar village of Karpa panchayat under Kalyansinghpur block of Rayagada district Saturday morning.
Luckily, their eight-year-old son had a narrow escape in the mishap with minor injuries. The deceased have been identified as Jasamanti Laya and her husband Madhab Laya.
Sources said, the incident occurred while the couple was brushing their teeth. All of a sudden, the wall of their house collapsed on them, killing the duo on the spot. Locals tried to rescue the two from the debris, but in vain.
The two had breathed their last by the time the locals dug them out of the debris. On being informed, officials of the district administration, including the Block Development Officer (BDO) Anup Panda, rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.
We rushed to the spot upon getting information. The bereaved family was granted Rs 4,000 under state-sponsored Harishchandra Yojana for performing the last rites of the deceased, said the BDO.
After the Revenue Inspector (RI) submits a detailed report on the incident, further assistance will be released from the tehsil office, Panda added.
In another incident, an elderly woman was killed in wall collapse at Pitaguda village under Junagarh block in Kalahandi district. The victim was sleeping in her room when a wall caved in on her. She died on the spot.
