Aska, Dec 23: A dreaded criminal, wanted in connection with at least two murders and several attempt to murder cases, sustained critical injuries after being shot at by police during an encounter on Aska –Balipadar road near Charimaili Square here in Ganjam district Wednesday.
Accused Bulu Nayak, a native of Nuagaon Badasahi, dropped down from the bike his accomplice was riding after sustaining injuries on his legs while policemen chasing him escaped his return fire. His accomplice managed to escape.
Profusely bleeding, Bulu was rushed by police to the local hospital where doctors administered him primary treatment and shifted him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. One of the bullets is stuck in his leg which has to be operated upon, Dr Jayant Kumat Updhaya of the hospital said.
The incident occurred when police on a tip off, raided Balipadar road early morning when Bulu was on his way to someplace with his accomplice. Police tried to intercept him at Charimaili Square when on noticing the police he tried to escape over the embankment of a pond. Policemen chased him but he tried to fire at police and escape. Police retaliated when fire.
Police registered a case charging Nayak with making a murder attempt on policemen by firing from his gun, IIC Baleshwar Gidhi said.
Gidhi said Nayak is a dreaded criminal and figured on the most wanted list of police. He is the prime accused in the murder of Budha Bisoyi at Aska College Square in August and the recent killing of former Buguda NAC chairman and BJD leader Balakrushna Patra. December 8, the police had arrested two accused persons, Bhagaban Sahu (45) of Sahebagada near Aska and Sunil Sethi (23) of Polasara in connection with their involvement in Patra’s murder case. Earlier, Bulu was also involved in firing at policemen at Nuagaon Square.
Bulu who had entered the crime scene recently was suspected to be operating in accordance with the direction of some other criminals, lodged in jail. PNN
