Dhenkikote: A woman died of severe burn injuries, while her husband was rendered critical after the lady set fire on herself with a view to end her life following a bitter fight with the latter at Katrabeda village under this police outpost limits in Keonjhar district Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Gouri Mohanta (28), wife of Chaitanya Mohanta (30).
Chaitanya sustained critical burn injuries while trying to rescue his wife. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and started an investigation into the matter. The incident has spread shockwaves in the area.
Police said the couple had fight on some issue Sunday night. Enraged, Gouri poured kerosene oil over her and set herself on fire.
Taken aback, Chaitanya tried to douse the fire and rescue her, but sustained severe burn injuries himself. Gouri sustained 60 per cent burn injuries by the time she was rescued, while her husband received 40 per cent burns.
They were admitted to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) where Gouri succumbed to her burn injuries Monday evening while undergoing treatment. Chaitanya is still undergoing treatment.
