Gop: A woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her home in Bairipur village under Gop police limits here Monday morning.
The trigger for the suicide is said to be a continuing feud with her husband over their poor financial condition.
According to sources, the woman, identified as Jhunarani Mohapatra, set herself afire after dousing herself with kerosene oil. She had locked the doors of the house from inside before taking the extreme step. Some neighbours and her family members, however, managed to rescue her in a critical condition.
She was initially rushed to the Puri district headquarters hospital with about 70 per cent burns. Later, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where she succumbed to her injuries, said a source.
Jhunarani of Balanga police limits had tied the nuptial knot with Manas Mohapatra a year ago. However, the duo allegedly had frequent quarrels over their poor financial condition.
On being informed, police reached the scene and seized a can of kerosene oil from the house. “A case of unnatural death has been registered,” said a police officer adding that investigation is under way.
