New Delhi: Lok Sabha member Bhartruhari Mahtab (BJD) Friday expressed concern over debit card fraud across the country and said the government has failed to safeguard the transaction data of bank customers which is confidential.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour Mahtab told the Lok Sabha that, “One of the biggest breaches of financial data was recently reported in Indian banks where unauthorised transactions have been traced to locations in China and the US. The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) also ordered a forensic probe into the hacking of around 3.2 million debit cards.”
He said large scale hacking has posed a question on the confidential credentials of banks and the government.
“It is said that hacking took place due to a malware introduced by Hitachi payment services which manages ATMs and point of sales. Around `10 crore is suspected to have been siphoned off fraudulently. There are many cases which might not have reported such occurrence and the magnitude could be even higher.”
Mahtab said and asked the Centre to ensure safeguards in the financial data of bank users and sought the forensic probe report by the NPCI and explain steps taken to safeguard interests of the bank users.
Cancer treatment
Nabrangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi requested the ministry of health and family welfare to ensure more cancer treatment facilities are provided in the state to take on life threatening disease.
Majhi raised the issue during Question Hour, “There had been a spurt in cancer cases in the country. But patients in states like Orissa are forced to go to Mumbai and other areas for cancer treatment.”
The existing cancer treatment facilities in Orissa are not adequate and hence cancer patients from the state go out of state. He said, “There are a few cancer treatment centres in the state. We demand opening of more cancer treatment centres in the state with Central assistance and we feel the need to replenish the existing infrastructure of cancer treatment facilities in the state.”
Responding to the concern of the MP, minister of state for health and family welfare Faggan Singh Kulaste said, “The cause of cancer could be attributed to increased consumption of tobacco products. We will look into the matter if we get specific proposals from Orissa in terms of cancer care.”
MSME loans
Balasore MP Rabindra Kumar Jena (also BJD) asked the finance ministry during Question Hour why many deserving candidates in his constituency are being deprived of loans from banks.
‘‘The RBI’s guidelines advising banks to provide loans to deserving candidates for the small and medium industries is clear. But in some parts of my constituency these loans are not been dispersed by some banks.” He asked steps the government should take to ensure such blatant violation of RBI norms by the banks.
Minister of state for finance Santosh Gangwar replied that the Centre is committed to helping deserving candidates to boost the MSME sector. As per provisions, loans can be extended up to `10lakh. If we get information about norms violation we would certainly act.”
