New Delhi, May 23: It is a matter of great concern. Crime against women is increasing year by year in Orissa. According to a report released by National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), there is 90 per cent rise in crime rates against women between 2001 and 2013 in the state.
Total crime against women in 2001 was 7455. It has increased to 14173 in 2013. The worrying point is that Orissa has gone up to 8th position from 12th position between these periods at national level. There has been a steep rise of crime against women since 2009. The bizarre surge of crimes was witnessed in 2012 with 130 per cent rise in comparison to crimes in 2001.
The crimes against women were categorised as rape, kidnapping and abduction, assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, insult to the modesty of women, cruelty by husband or his relatives, importation of girls from foreign country, immoral traffic, dowry prohibition, indecent representation of women and commission of sati.
There is almost 290 per cent increase in dowry related cases and crimes between 2001 and 2012 in Orissa. Crimes concerning to rape, kidnapping and abduction, assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty and cruelty by husband or his relatives have increased 87 per cent, 142 per cent, 166 per cent and 138 per cent respectively during these 12 years.
