Bargarh/Atabira: A day after the body of a youth was found under mysterious circumstances in Batimunda village under Atabira police limits in Bargarh district, police cracked the murder mystery by arresting the victim’s lover Saturday.
Susant Naik, son of Pankaj Naik in Batimunda village, was killed late Thursday night. His body was recovered from the courtyard of his neighbour the next day.
The accused was identified as Sukanti Biswal (25), daughter of Tikeshwar Bag of the same village. Sukanti hacked Susant to death with an axe following a heated altercation between the two late Thursday night. Police also seized the murder weapon and sent it for forensic examination.
Sukanti was produced in court which remanded her in judicial custody. This was stated at a media meet by sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Suresh Kumar Nayak in Bargarh Saturday.
The SDPO said the deceased and Sukanti were in love for last three to four years. However, their relationship was soured when Sukanti married Kiriti Biswal of Saharapali village under Bheden police limits in the district.
After marriage, Sukanti often visited her village. She came to her parents’ house before Sabitri Amavasya when Susant met her and asked her to divorce her husband and stay in the village. Sukanti replied that she would divorce her husband and stay back in the village if Susant accepts her as his wife.
However, Susant did not accept her condition and insisted her on staying back in the village. She was set to return to her in-law’s place Friday when Susant scaled the wall of her house late night and entered inside.
The two again had a fight over the issue inside her room. Enraged, Sukanti picked up an axe and delivered a sharp blow on the deceased’s head. Profusely bleeding, Susant screamed for help when her parents woke up and pulled the former to the courtyard where he succumbed to injuries.
The next morning the deceased’s brother Santosh lodged a complaint with Atabira police which seized the body and started an investigation. PNN
