Angul: Police busted a laptop theft gang by arresting two persons here Monday.
The accused were identified as Guru Charan Pushpalak (58), the mastermind of the racket, and Ajay Kumar Pradhan (40) of Satasankha area in Puri district. Pradhan used to work as an agent in selling the stolen laptops.
A case was registered and the accused were produced in a court. Eight laptops were seized from the accused, said SDPO Harihar Pani at a presser.
Pushpalak was arrested when he was having lunch at a hotel in Angul bus stand. Police managed to arrest the two accused with the help of the footage of CCTV camera installed in a passenger bus. Further investigations were on, the SDPO said.
Pushpalak, a history-sheeter, was in the business of stealing laptops since for the last 20 years. He usually stole at least 40 laptops a month from Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Angul and Bhubaneswar.
Later, he would sell the laptops to Pradhan by changing the software with the help of his nephew. Pushpalak used to keep a watch on the movement of persons in bus stand, railway stations and crowded placed and steal their laptops when they are distracted.
He was arrested over a complaint lodged by bus passenger Subhas Sekhar Bau (33) of Kalahandi district. Pushpalak admitted to his crime during interrogation by the police.
