Bhapur: Police Monday unraveled the mystery behind the deaths of a woman, whose half-burnt body was recovered December 29, and her four-month-old daughter near Kantilo under Fategarh police limits in Nayagarh district December 29 last year.
The police arrested Saroj Kumar Guru, the husband of the deceased woman and the main accused in the case.
After his arrest, Saroj took the police to the spot where he had dumped the baby girl’s body. Police recovered the decomposed body from a bush near Kamei riverbed and sent it for post-mortem. A case of murder was registered and Saroj was produced in a court. The court remanded him in judicial custody after rejecting his bail plea.
According to sources, Saroj, son of Prafulla Kumar Guru of Dhanachangada village under Fategarh police limits, worked in a private company in Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar.
There, he developed a relationship with Kabita Jeti and subsequently married her. However, for reasons best known to him, Saroj never took his wife to his village. Meanwhile, the couple became parents to a baby girl.
Saroj was frustrated as Kabita pestered him to take her to his village. He hatched a plan to eliminate her. On the fateful day, Saroj took Kabita and the baby in a bus on the pretext of taking them to his village.
They alighted from the bus near Kamei riverbed where he bludgeoned Kabita to death. Most inhumanely, he also killed the baby and dumped the body in a bush and fled. He also tried to burn Kabita’s body to destroy evidence.
On being alerted by locals, Fategarh IIC Ashutosh Mishra seized Kabita’s body and sent it for post-mortem. Police failed to trace the body of the baby though they recovered a pair of socks, a feeding bottle, diapers and other items from the spot.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Saroj from an eatery. The police suspect the involvement of more persons in the crime. PNN
