Cuttack: A 32-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death over a suspected extramarital affair at Manglasahi here Sunday. The area comes under Madhupatna police limits.
Basant Dora alias Dhapu, a resident of Bamphi Sahi, was found in a pool of blood Sunday afternoon. Madhupatna police and a scientific team visited the spot and sent the body to SCB Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
The police have recovered a motorcycle, an eyeglass, wallet and cellphone belonging to Basant and the iron poles and sharp-edged weapons used for the murder from the spot. After a preliminary investigation, police detained four persons including the woman with whom Basant had the alleged affair, her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law.
Sources said Basant was the youngest of four siblings. He was married and had two children. His brother Sushant said he left home at 9 am. Later, Sushant received the shocking news of his death at 11 am.
“When I reached Manglasahi, I saw my brother’s body lying in a pool of blood. He was murdered due to previous enmity,” Sushant said.
“It was a pre-planned murder. He was called to the slum and killed. The police should thoroughly probe the matter and take action against the culprits,” Sushant added.
Madhupatna inspector-in-charge J K Dalai said the murder was the fallout of an extramarital affair between Basant and the woman. The in-laws of the woman used to oppose Basant’s visit to their house.
“Many criminal cases were pending against Basant at Purighat police station. He was released from jail four months back. Before his jail term he had eloped with the woman a year back. The woman’s in-laws had lodged a missing complaint regarding this,” Dalai said.
“The scientific team said Basant was attacked on the head with iron pipes and sharp-edged weapons. “We recovered iron poles and sharp weapons from the spot. We have detained the woman, her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law. Another family member is on the run,” Dalai said.
On the basis of the complaint of the deceased’s brother, a case was registered and inquiry is on, Dalai added.
