Bhubaneswar: A 59-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by the district and sessions court here Tuesday for raping his six-year-old niece in Jatni in August 2014.
The court also imposed a penalty of ` 5,000 on the convict, Gangadhar Sahoo, a resident of Nuasahi under Jatni police limits. Failure to pay the sum would entail an additional jail term of six months. Sahoo was charged under Section 376 (2) (rape of a minor) of IPC and Section 4 of POCSO Act August 29, 2014.
The victim had narrated before the judge, PC Mohapatra, how Sahoo had called her into his house on the pretext of giving her a chocolate.
After she came, Sahoo asked her to lie down on the bed while putting the TV on loud volume and committed rape on her, she had said.
The six witnesses produced by prosecution lawyers BB Mohanty and Subrata Priyadarshi corroborated the account of the victim.
The judge observed that circumstantial evidences and medical examination of the victim also established beyond doubt the offence committed by Sahoo.
