10-yr-old boy chained by granny rescued

Cuttack: Childline volunteers with the help of police rescued an 8-year-old boy from a house where his grandmother had kept him in chains for the past two months at Niladri Vihar under Chauliganj area in Cuttack district Monday.

The minor, after the death of his father was under the care of the old woman in Chauliaganj area as his mother left him and remarried.

Alerted by neighbours, a joint team of the Cuttack Child Welfare Committee and Chauliaganj police went to the house and rescued the boy. The boy alleged that he was beaten by his grandmother and even deprived of food for days.

Police have detained the woman for questioning and sent the boy to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for medical check-up. The elderly woman, on the other hand said she had tied the boy to prevent him from fleeing from the house as neighbours were complaining about his mischief.

He will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and further steps will be taken as per the direction of the CWC, said a member of the Childline.
