100 mt-long river embankment in jeopardy

Dhamnagar: A 100 metre stretch of stone-packed embankment along river Genguti in Dhamnagr block of Bhadrak district developed a long crack and is caving in. This has triggered panic among locals, who held the irrigation department responsible for the problem.

The embankment is part of the Bhadrak-Akhandalamani road. The local people alleged that crores of rupees are being spent for river renovation projects, but the work is botched up. They asserted that there have been large-scale irregularities in Genguti renovation project due to an unholy nexus among engineers of the department, contractors and politicians. At some places, renovation has been carried out forcibly while quality of bridge and stone-packing work has been compromised.

A portion of the embankment near Patrisahi developed a crack Wednesday night and is caving in. This has posed danger to nearby buildings in the village.   PNN
