Dasmantpur: The inmates of Dasmantpur Girls’ High School’s hostel in Koraput district, were delighted Friday to know that they have been provided with 110 cots and mattresses.
The action came after OrissaPOST had carried reports regarding this.
The residents of Dasmantpur Girls’ Hostel were forced to sleep on the floor during winter when temperatures were below 15 degrees.
The 110-bed hostel was established at Dasmantpur in Koraput district in August, 2018. But the authorities had not provided basic facilities to the inmates.
The hostel still does not have a boundary wall. As a result the hostel’s compound becomes an open bar and a hub for antisocial elements at night.
As inmates feel unsafe here some of them didn’t return to the hostel when it reopened January 2, after winter holidays.
Of the 110 inmates, only 56 had come back to the hostel after holidays till Tuesday. The hostel authorities had shown little interest in bringing the residents back.
The inmates had also alleged that the hostel was providing low quality food to them. Due to lack of basic facilities and adequate safety at the hostel, many girls didn’t show interest in coming back, some of the inmates said.
The hostel residents had threatened to leave the hostel permanently if adequate safety and basic facilities were not provided.
The inmates have demanded a boundary wall around the hostel and a gate. They said, “The government has provided beds and mattresses for the boarders, but that is not enough.”
WEO Harishchandra Chottara said he had informed higher authorities about the need for a boundary wall and a gate for the hostel to ensure the safety of students.
