12-year old boy prevents girl from drowning by suicide, becomes hero in Malkangiri district

Malkangiri: A 12-year-old boy in Malkangiri district has become a hero overnight after saving a minor girl from drowning. The brave boy has been identified as Bulu Muduli. He belongs to the Adivasi (Tribal) community from Balimela town locality in the district.

Sources said that the girl tried to kill herself by suicide after she failed in the matriculation (Class X) examination, July 29. The results of the exams were announced on the same day.

The girl went to a bridge near Balimela Power House with the intention of committing suicide by jumping into the river. At that time, Bulu was passing through the same bridge on his cycle. The girl stopped Bulu and enquired whether he was carrying a cell phone as she wanted to make a call. Bulu however, left the spot telling her that he did not have a mobile.

When he was returning through the same spot some time later, he found a crowd had gathered. He then came to know that the girl had jumped into the river. Bulu spotted the girl struggling in the river to stay afloat. Without wasting any time, he jumped into the river.

In spite of the strong current, Bulu managed to reach the girl. He then pulled her close to the shore and then others got into the act to pull them on land. By then the girl had lost conscious as she had consumed a lot of water. Bulu however was okay.

A person who was among the crowd applied cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to drain out water from the girl’s stomach. After she responded to CPR and started breathing again, the girl was rushed to the Balimela hospital. Sources said that her condition is stable.

Meanwhile Bulu’s bravery was appreciated by all and sundry. Everybody was in awe of the bravery demonstrated by a 12-year-old who risked his life to jump into the river and save the girl.
