Cuttack: As many as 134 four-wheeler riders registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) here would soon have their driving licences (DLs) revoked.
“The RTO has been urged to revoke DLs of 134 errant four-wheelers riders. They were found driving in violation of the road safety norms,” revealed the traffic management committee meeting, convened at the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) office here Wednesday evening.
In view of growing encroachments in the Silver City, the meeting decided to carry out regular eviction drives twice a week.
Sources said several buses and trucks were seen parked alongside the national highway between OMP Square and Jagatpur. As a result, commuters face a tough time negotiating the traffic. “Vehicle owners and drivers will be alerted to avoid parking in the stretch. If the situation persists, violators will be penalised,” the meeting said.
This apart, long buses engaged by schools also create traffic snarls while passing through narrow bends in the city. In an attempt to overcome the issue, the meeting decided to restrict the movement of those buses. Notifications would be sent to school authorities in this connection, sources said.
A sub-committee, comprising senior officials of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), Cuttack Development Authority (CDA), R&B department, Irrigation Department, tehsildar and ACP (Traffic), would soon identify and shortlist locations for vending zones in the city, sources said.
This apart, it was also decided in the meeting to renovate parking of vehicles near the cardiology department of SCB Medical College and Hospital here. Besides, CMC would pull down illegal hoardings on SCB premises. Vehicles like auto-rickshaws ferrying schoolchildren would be inspected on a regular basis, the committee said.
To intensify the crackdown on traffic offenders, joint teams of RTO and traffic have been formed. “These teams will undertake surprise checks and track vehicles violating rules, including use of fancy number plates and drunk driving. Stern actions will be taken against them,” the meeting decided.
Moreover, installation of LED street lights in the city would be concluded within 100 days. The civic body would initiate measures to keep stray animals off the city limits, the committee members concluded.
DCP Akhilesvar Singh and traffic assistant commissioner of police (ACP) PK Dalai were among others who attended the meeting.
