16-year-old market complex remains unused

Rahama: A market complex at Sarala road under Tirtol block on Cuttcak-Paradip road has been lying unutilised since its inauguration 16 years ago, resulting in revenue loss for the panchayat.

During the tenure of the then MLA Debashis Samantaray, the market complex with four rooms was constructed spending lakhs of rupees in 2002.

After lying vacant for 12 years, the block administration again spent Rs 1 lakh to relaunch it.  Tirtol MLA Rajashree Mallick inaugurated the building December 19, 2016.

Though 18 months have passed since its inauguration, these shops are yet to be allotted to the people.

With the building remained unused for a long period, it has started developing cracks. The plaster has been coming off, making the iron rods visible.

The complex has been turned into a virtual cycle stand during the day and a den for anti-socials in the night.

Earlier, the complex was under the control of Tirtol panchayat.

But for the last one-and-a-half year, it has been under Tentulipada panchayat, which was formed out of Tirtol panchayat during the 2017 panchayat election.

The local people said the administration showed little interest in making the complex functional.
