18 dead, many feared trapped in Varanasi flyover collapse

Varanasi/Lucknow: At least 18 people have died and several are feared trapped after a portion of an under construction flyover collapsed post-noon in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi Tuesday.
Two pillars of the under construction flyover collapsed in Varanasi’s Cantt area close to the railway station, bringing a huge slab of concrete down, crushing cars and a local bus under it.
Many of those trapped are reported to be labourers who were working on the flyover. “It is feared that several people are buried under the rubble,” an official said.
A team of National Disaster Response Force or NDRF has been rushed to the spot for rescue operations. Dozens of policemen, including the Uttar Pradesh DGP, are also present at the spot.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and directed the district administration and PWD officials to take all necessary steps for relief and rescue operations. Local administration was providing emergency services.
