Phulbani: A constable was allegedly stabbed in broad daylight near Sai Mandir in the heart of Phulbani town Friday in what police described as an attempt to murder. Police have arrested two persons in connection with the attack. The injured constable has been identified as Manoranjan Sabat. He was initially treated at a local hospital in Phulbani and later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after his condition was reported to be critical.
The accused have been identified as Santosh Swain, 28, and Anjan Pradhan, 25, both residents of Salunki Sahi in Phulbani.
According to reports, the incident took place at around noon when Sabat was on duty near the temple. An argument reportedly broke out between the constable and the two accused for reasons yet to be ascertained. The altercation escalated, following which the duo allegedly attacked Sabat with a knife and also assaulted him with sticks.
Eyewitnesses present at the spot intervened and overpowered the two assailants, rescuing the injured constable from their clutches. They subsequently informed the police. A team from Phulbani Town police station reached the scene and took the two accused into custody. A case has been registered in connection with the incident, and the accused have been produced before a local court.
