Thakurmunda: A portion of a hill collapsed in the Similipal wildlife sanctuary in Mayurbhanj district following heavy rain triggered by a low-pressure system, causing concern among residents of nearby villages. The landslide occurred in the Jajuli compartment, SL-12, under the Bahaghar section of the Thakurmunda wildlife range, near Nuakeshdiha and Chandikhaman villages under Keshdiha gram panchayat in Thakurmunda block.
According to local residents, a section of the hill suddenly gave way at about 3am Saturday following heavy rain. The collapse was accompanied by a loud sound that frightened people in the nearby villages. The landslide reportedly stretched for about 2 kilometres and covered a width of nearly 30 feet, damaging several valuable trees in the forest. Residents of Nuakesh diha and Chandikhaman have expressed concern about their safety following the incident. On being informed, Mahuldi ha police and forest officials reached the site and were monitoring the situation.
