Jharpokharia: Tension prevailed at the Sarasaka na Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Mayurbhanj district Sunday following the death of a 2-year-old girl, with villagers and relatives alleging medical negligence.
The protesters allegedly vandalised furniture and other property at the PHC and set fire to some items.
Police registered a case (255/26) at Jharpokharia police station on the basis of a written complaint filed by PHC in-charge Dr Manoj Murmu and launched an investigation.
According to reports, Bulbul, daughter of Raja Behera of Behera Sahi in Mundakata village under Sarasakana block, was seriously injured after suffering an electric shock Saturday.
Her family brought her to the PHC around 2pm.
As no doctor was available there, she was taken to the Sirsa Community Health Centre. Doctors at Sirsa referred her to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.
However, after the girl was brought to the hospital, doctors declared her dead. Alleging that the child died due to medical negligence, villagers and her relatives gathered at the Sarasakana PHC Sunday morning and staged a protest.
They burnt tyres in front of the health facility before allegedly vandalising furniture and setting fire to property on the premises.
On being informed, Jhar Pokharia police reached the spot and pacified the protesters. The situation later returned to normal.
