Baleshwar: A two-storey building, believed to be around 200 years old and having links with noted Odia litterateur Vyasa Kabi Fakir Mohan Senapati, collapsed in the Barabati area of Baleshwar town Sunday night.
According to sources, the building was constructed during the British era by the greatgrandfather of Bachu Madhab Prasad. The British government later used it as a temporary jail.
After a new jail was built, Fakir Mohan Senapati converted the building into a traditional school and taught local children there. The building had fallen into a dilapidated condition due to years of neglect and lack of maintenance.
The family members of the current owners had been living in a new house constructed behind the old building. No one was injured in the collapse, according to the report.
