3 bike-lifters nabbed, 40 vehicles recovered

Cuttack, April 12: Cuttack police arrested three of a six-member inter-district gang of bike robbers at Dolmundai traffic square here Sunday.

District commissioner of police Sanjiv Arora told newspersons police had seized 40 motorcycles from various parts of the city. The bike lifters have been active in Jajpur, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Bhubaneswar for two years. Three members of the gang are, however, at large.

The three were arrested at Dolamundai during regular vehicle checking.

Biswajit Khatua, a bike owner, complained that his motorcycle was stolen from his office April 6. The police during a routine checking Sunday detained Jitu alias Ramakanta Mandal after he failed to produce documents relating to his bike.

During interrogation he informed the police of his gang after which a team led by Zone-3 ACP Anil Mishra arrested the trio and seized 40 bikes from different places. The arrested persons are Jitu, Rajesh Mahapatra alias Raju and Dipu alias Satyabrata Sahu.

Accused Ganesh Barik, Sunil Valmiki and DR Gagrai escaped from the spot.

Arora said the vehicle-lifters usually send the stolen vehicles to Dipu who resold them to customers between Rs 10,000 and Rs 12,000. Jitu is said to be the mastermind of the gang against him four cases of bike thefts and burglary were reported in Jajpur, Kalinganagar, Mangalabagh and Badambadi.
