Rupsa: Three policemen were injured when villagers attacked them during a cock fight at Jamunia ground under Rupsa police limits in Balasore district Tuesday.
Reports said cock fight, gambling and liquor sale were going on at Jamunia on Christmas.
Rupsa police station IIC Surendra Mahalik, an APR havildar and two constables reached the spot and asked the locals to halt such activities. The police officials allegedly tried to snatch away cocks from the villagers.
This led to escalation of the situation and the villagers attacked the police. They also vandalised the police van. Three of the policemen were injured in the attack. The locals detained two policemen in the village.
The SDPO and the IIC rescued the two policemen.
On the other hand, tension prevailed in the village after the cops arrested six persons for their alleged involvement in betting on cockfights.
Irate mob vandalised the police van in protest against the arrest of the persons involved in betting. Police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation.
A case has been registered against the accused persons. Strict action will be taken against the cockfight organisers, the police said.
