Cuttack: Purighat police Monday arrested three more BJP leaders in the city for their alleged hooliganism during the party’s agitation in front of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) last week.
The arrested were identified as Hemant Behera of Sheikh Bazaar, Biswajit Jyotik of Bangalisahi and Himansu Sekhar Nayak of Jobra area. Later, the arrested were produced before the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) here. The trio was sent to Choudwar jail after the court rejected their bail applications.
Notably, hundreds of BJP supporters January 11 had demonstrated before CMC office protesting against corruption and delay in the execution of Integrated Sanitation Project by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
During the demonstration, the protesters entered into a clash with the police when the latter stopped them from marching towards the CMC office. Bhubaneswar additional DCP Rajkishore Paikray and constable Bhujabal Majhi were injured when stones pelted by BJP leaders hit them during the clash.
Earlier, Purighat police had registered two cases and arrested four BJP leaders January 12. “Another 25 protestors have been identified who had pelted stones at the police. They will be arrested soon,” said inspector-in-charge Tapas Pradhan.
