Cuttack, Sept 20: Barang police claims to have busted an inter-district highway robbers’ gang and arrested three of its members.
Police have recovered a gun, some bullets, `30,000, a car and three two-wheelers from the arrested robbers. The accused have been identified as Suryakant Chhotray and Rakesh Nayak of Bolgarh area in Khurda and Seikh Arshid of Jatni, said deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora.
Barang police in-charge Sanjay Kumar Patnaik and special squad officials arrested the three robbers after conducting a series of raids. However, some gang members managed to escape. “Raids are being conducted to arrest all other members of the gang,” said a Barang police official.
Police said the gang was active in Cuttack, Khurda and Nayagarh districts for the last couple of months. “They usually targeted traders and officials of finance companies. They used to threaten commuters with firearms and rob their valuables,” Arora elaborated on the gang’s modus-operandi.
Police said the gang had snatched `60,000, a laptop and a mobile phone from a finance company agent at gun-point at Barang June 7. A case in this regard was registered.
“The gang was involved in several robbery incidents in Begunia and Khurda area. The gang had also fired at a patrolling party in Baideswar area a few days ago,” Patnaik said.
At least 15 cases were earlier registered against Chhotray at various police stations in Cuttack and Khurda districts. Similarly, the other two arrested gang members were booked in a number of cases, Patnaik added.
