30 held for blocking ministers’ houses

Bhubaneswar: The police Tuesday detained more than 30 agitating teachers who tried to gherao the residences of school and mass education minister Debi Prasd Mishra, skill development and technical education minister Sanjay Das Burma and law and panchayati raj minister Arun Sahoo.
Teachers affiliated to Gana Sikshyak Mahasangha have been demanding hike in their remuneration and regularisation of their services. The teachers decided to lay siege to the ministers’ houses after a meeting of sub-ministerial committee failed to come up with a feasible
solution to their problems.
Notably, the state government had announced teachers who had put in service for six years would be regularised and get salary accordingly. However, the state has not done any paper work or issued any notification in this regard which has angered the teachers Tuesday.
“The state government has been playing with our emotions. They said our demands should be conceded, but we are not going to be cowed down by words. The state has not issued any notification in this regard. We will not stop until the state takes concrete steps to address our demands,” said an agitating teacher here.
Sources at the school and mass education department said the sub-ministeral committee formed to look into the issue of Gana Sikshyaks had met December 18, but due to unknown reasons failed to decide the teachers’ demands.
“The committee is examining the situation. There are legal and administrative issues in this matter which is taking time for the matter to be sorted out. The teachers need to be patient in this situation,” said a high-level official of the department.
