Balasore/Kamakhyanagar/Paradip: At least five people were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in Balasore, Jagatsinghpur and Dhenkanal districts Saturday.
According to reports from Balasore, two persons were killed on the spot and six injured on NH-5 at Jamujhadi Chhak under Simulia police limits in the wee hours Saturday when an SUV in which they were travelling hit a stationary truck parked on the roadside this morning, they said.
Four of the injured were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack from Bhadrak district headquarters hospital while two others were undergoing treatment in Bhadrak hospital.
Pratima Maiti (36) and her husband Deepak Maiti (45) along with Manoj Nayak, Sabita Mandal, Deepak Mandal and three children–Banita Nayak, Kabita Nayak and Rantan Manna-were returning from Cuttack after visiting a relative at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Deepak and Pratima, who hailed from Medinapore, died on the spot. The injured belonged to Khantapada area. Police registered a case and sent the bodies for post-mortem. Police said the toll may mount in view of the critical condition of the injured.
In another mishap near Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district, a man and his son-in-law were killed after the bike they were riding on was hit by a truck near Hatitanki Saturday morning, police said.
The deceased were identified as Dibakar Parida and his son-in-law Benudhar Tarai, sources said.
Tension prevailed in the area following the accident as angry locals blocked Chandikhole-Paradip road by burning tyres demanding compensation to the bereaved family.
Police rushed to the spot and started an investigation while the driver of the truck was
arrested.
In Dhenkanal, a goat trader Mahidul Saha (26) of East Medinapore region in West Bengal was killed after the bike he was riding pillion rammed a roadside tree at Patharkhamba Square under Kamakhyanagar police limits.
The bikers Tata Munda (25) and his five-year-old son Janmejaya Munda were rendered critical and admitted to Kamakhyanagar hospital. The deceased was trading in goats by staying in Telkoi of Keonjhar district. He was accompanying Tata and his son on their bike to Kamakhyanagar from Parjang when the mishap occurred. PNN
