Cuttack, Dec 28: About 53 of 344 registered chemical industries in the district are vulnerable to mishaps, industry joint director Chandrakant Dalai said while speaking at a workshop conducted by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Orissa State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) in association with the district administration here recently.
According to the Industries Act of 1948, the district has as many as 344 registered industries dealing with chemicals. Of these, 53 industries were found to be not adhering to proper safety measures in production and management of the units and are prone to industrial disasters.
Participating in the workshop, senior advisors of NDMA, OSDMA and several scientists observed that industrial disasters are caused either by accidents, negligence or incompetence. Similarly, chemical accidents occur due to fire, explosions, leakages or release of toxic substances from the industries, which could cause illness, injury, disability or death, the speakers opined.
The participants also mentioned that while the Union and state governments have promulgated several acts to ensure avoidance of industrial disasters, the industrial units do not lay due emphasis on effective control of such disasters.
The two-day workshop discussed threadbare the post-disaster mitigation and rehabilitation measures and concluded Saturday.
