Odagaon: In a horrific incident, a six-year-old boy from Ganjam suffocated to death inside an abandoned car inside which he inadvertently locked himself while on a visit to Surat where his father works.
Somesh Das, son of Santosh and Prabhati Das, lived with his mother at his maternal grandparents’ home in Pantikhari Sasan village of Nayagarh district where he was a kindergarten student of Gayatri Vidyamandir. He had gone to Surat along with his mother to spend his summer holidays with his father who worked there at a textile mill.
The incident occurred June 13 on the day before Raja when Somesh sought permission from his mother to go to a nearby park. His mother agreed and asked him to come home early. Somesh agreed and left for the park, wearing new clothes.
The little boy saw a car lying abandoned near the park. Wondering if he could get inside, the boy opened the door. Curiosity got the better of him and the boy got inside the car. He then got out, and climbed back in. He did this for a couple of times before inadvertently locking himself inside the car. These details emerged from footage of a CCTV camera installed nearby.
When the boy failed to return home till late evening, his parents panicked and lodged a complaint with police. Teams searched for the boy everywhere but nobody thought of checking the abandoned car lying right outside the park.
Six days passed with no trace of the little boy. Friday, locals complained of a stench emanating from the car. When police opened the car, they found Somesh’s decomposed body inside,
A pall of gloom descended in the village after news of Somesh’s death reached. His parents are reportedly in shock.
Surat police handed over the boy’s body to his family members after conducting a post-mortem of the body. PNN
