Maidalpur: A 60-year-old man who successfully fought off a wild bear is presently recuperating at Papadahandi community health centre (CHC).

The sexagenarian’s fight with the wild bear has become a hot topic at the CHC, with many eager listeners huddling over him as he narrates the story.

A resident of Kenduguda village under Papadahandi block in Nabarangpur district, Saga Pujari had gone to the nearby jungle to collect firewood in the wee hours of Wednesday. While collecting firewood, from nowhere a full-grown wild bear appeared in front of him before pouncing on him the very next moment.

Instead of feeling nervous and letting the animal overpower him, he gathered courage and fought with it. Later he managed to reach out to the axe and attacked the ferocious animal with it following which the animal escaped into the jungle.

Profusely bleeding, Saga climbed up a tree and remained there till the arrival of his family members. Family members went into the jungle searching for him as it was beyond the normal time for his return from the jungle. Seeing the family members below, Saga called them who helped him climb down. Saga had injuries on his left shoulder and chest. Thereafter he was rushed to Maidalpur Primary Health Centre (PHC) and from where he was shifted to Papadahandi community health centre (CHC).
