7-yr-old with 68 kg body weight struggles to walk

Kamakhyanagar, May 17: The ‘very good health’ of a seven-year-old kid has become a major cause of worry for his father Mithun Pradhan, a daily labourer of Gundichanali village under this block in Dhenkanal district.

The mobility of Akash, having a body weight of 68 kg has largely been restricted due to his abnormal growth. It is not only Akash, the weight of his eight-month-old sister Tulasi is also growing unusually. She is now 18 kg , informed her mother Mita.

At a time when his friends are in school, Akash has to stay at home as he is unable to move with his body weight, Mita said. He even can’t open his eyes with growth of fleshy tissues around them and is reluctant to walk, she added. Though Akash is just seven-year old, it is difficult to carry him in arms, Mithun Pradhan, his father, said.

The weight of the kids is growing even as they take food like any other children of their age, it was learnt.

While the siblings are in news for this reason, Mithun and Mita are under severe stress as they cannot afford the expensive treatment of their children.

When contacted, Dr Manoranjan Rout of Kamakhyanagar sub-divisional hospital said obesity has become a global health issue thanks to unbalanced food habit and genetic disorder. However, a special test is required in this case to identify the exact reason, he added.

Facility for such tests is available in SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack and assistance from Red Cross society would be provided to the poor family for the treatment of their children, Rout further said.
