Your blue jeans are 144yr old now!

Your ready-to-go look is incomplete without a pair of denims. In fact, the most important element of your wardrobe is definitely the quintessential blue jeans. But, did you ever wanted to know about its birthday? Most of you haven’t thought about it perhaps. Well, May 20 is the birth anniversary of denims. Denim—a fabric, is traditionally coloured blue with indigo dye. This was used to make jeans by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss in 1873. The blue jeans are believed to be born on May 20, 1873 as David and Strauss got a U.S. patent. This year, it is the 144th birthday of blue jeans. Over the years, the blue jeans had undergone several adaptations to fit the style statements of various eras. Paying a tribute to the essential blue jeans, Orissa Post brings you some of the vintage styles of that die-hard-fans of jeans swear by:

Magic of boot-cut denims: This style was frequently used by the sailors in 18th century. Today, it has successfully made a comeback into the fashion industry. The boot-cut style later evolved into bell-bottomed jeans with wider flare than the former. Finally, it became popular again in 2015. The thumb rule for looking gorgeous in boot-cut jeans is to tuck the shirt in.

De-stress fashion woes with distressed jeans: The trend of ripped or distressed jeans were not easily accepted by the Indian society. Jokes on ‘fati jeans’ made these socially unacceptable for some years.  But, post 2014 it has been a big hit here. It was a rage in 1980s during the Punk Movement. It is best to team it up with a white top or a ruffled tee.

Let it go skinny: These slim cut jeans were popular in the 50s. Marilyn Monroe and Roy Rogers had popularized these. Today, they are definitely a fashion staple. T-shirts or crop tops look the best with these.

High-waist jeans: High-rise denims were admired in the ’40s. Actors Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich hyped the trend of wearing the high-waists. Today, it is a must-have for youngsters here. Crop tops go well with the high waists.

 Trend setters

  • Actor Marilyn Monroe made the high-waist, bottom fold denims a rage in the 60s after she rocked it in her movie The Misfits (1961)
  • Hindi superstars like Parveen Babi and Dharmendra made the flared denims popular in 70s
  • The members of punk rock band Ramones popularized the ripped jeans in mid-70s, before skinny ankle-length jeans and denim dungarees made their way into the 80s and 90s respectively
