Bhubaneswar: A health camp was conducted for more than 90 residents of three shelter homes in the city at Ganganagar, Ashok Nagar and Chandrasekharpur, Wednesday.
Around 10 doctors from a city-based medical college did dental and heart checkup of the residents at the Ganganagar shelter.
The beneficiaries, who are staying in these shelter for urban homeless (SUH) for years, are checked regularly by the doctors of the college.
The camp was organised on the occasion of second foundation day of SUHs.
That apart, the homeless people were given gifts and a cake cutting ceremony was also held.
Matrumayee Priyadarshinee, the shelter coordinator of Odisha Patita Udhar Samiti (OPUS), said, “At present more than 100 homeless people stay with us permanently at our three Shelters for Urban Homeless (SUH).”
The OPUS, who is managing the five SUHs in the city for Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), has collaborated with the medical college for free health checkup.
Abharani Choudhury, secretary of OPUS, said, “The mentally challenged and old homeless people need extra care and treatment than the normal ones. They cannot make adjustments with the normal people. So, they should be kept at a single home by deploying caretakers and doctors.”
