Bhubaneswar, Feb 2: The state government Monday urged the Centre to provide two additional battalions of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to deal with Maoist menace in the state.
“Two more CAPF battalions are urgently required to supplement deployment of forces in Nuapada and Malkangiri districts along Chhattisgarh boarder and conduct meaningful anti-Maoist operations in the new areas of Maoist activity,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said in a letter to Union home minister Rajnath Singh.
Stating that the CPI (Maoist) still maintains resilience and poses a grave threat to security forces in the areas bordering Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, the CM said, “In the emerging scenario of Left-wing extremism (LWE), the situation continues to remain challenging in Malkangiri, Koraput and Nuapada districts.”
“Intelligence inputs suggest that Maosits are trying to consolidate their position in Western Orissa, particularly in Nuapada district, for quite some time. A large number of cadres have moved in from Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand to the district,” he said.
As two more CAPF battalions are likely to be inducted in Chhattisgarh, it may cause influx of Ultras into Orissa. Deployment of additional forces will be necessary to thwart infiltration of Maoists into the state, Patnaik said in the letter.
