Bhubaneswar: An alleged conman has fled with over `2 lakh collected from villagers by falsely promising to help them get loans from financial institutions. An accomplice of the culprit was nabbed by the victims Sunday and handed over to the police here.
According to the complaint, a sweet-talking person masquerading as a banker visited Chakeisiani village often. He convinced the victims that he had helped many poor families to avail loans. He promised the members of a self-help group in the village of helping to avail loans worth `2lakh each. Trusting his words, 15 members of the SHG gave him a sum of `2 lakh for the paper work needed to avail the loans.
However, the conman never turned up since he received the money and has also switched off his mobile to cut off all communications. The members of the SHG Sunday lodged a written complaint with Mancheswar police.
