Baripada: Taking a serious note of an alleged incident of police highhandedness on a youth, the state home department has directed the DGP and the SP of Mayurbhanj district to initiate action in this regard.
A sub-inspector of the Town police station here had allegedly chased a youth and beaten him up at Murgabadi Golei March 15.
Under secretary of state home department Nityanada Singh in a letter-20228 (dated May 5, 2018) has sought a report from the DGP and the SP over the matter.
The incident had taken place at 9 pm. Pritam Parida, a local youth, felt exhausted and sat on a bike. A police patrolling team was passing by then. Sub-inspector Debasish Satpathy asked the youth about the reason for his sitting there at night. The youth explained that he was taking rest.
Surprisingly, the cop flew into a rage and punched and kicked the youth. As locals opposed the action, the SI ran away.
Angry, locals had blocked Murgabadi-Bhanjapur Road, clamouring for stern action against the errant cop.
Later, the sub-inspector was shifted from Town police station to the district police headquarters.
However, human rights activist Srikumar Mohant had written to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Union home ministry about the police highhandedness. Mohant had urged the ministry to ensure that the youth is compensated.
The ministry directed the state Chief Secretary to look into the matter and provided Rs 2 lakh compensation to the youth.
