Baripada: A student was killed in a road mishap Friday. He was run over by a speeding truck on National Highway-18 near Baisinga Chhak in Mayurbhanj district. The deceased was Mangala Murmu of Padmanavpur village.
Sources said the deceased, a Plus II student of Betanati college, was cycling to his tuition centre when the mishap occurred. Irked locals staged a road blockade near the accident spot, demanding adequate compensation to the deceased’s family. The villagers said the vehicle was over-speeding. “We demand action against the driver,” said a villager.
The villagers withdrew the blockade as, on reaching the spot, the Betanati additional tehsildar, SDPO and other officials promised them that their demands will be met. The blockade disrupted traffic on the road connecting Baripada and Balasore for a couple of hours. The police detained the driver and seized the truck.
