Phulbani: A local court Friday awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to a youth for raping a 14-year-old minor.
The convict was Suryakant Nayak of Ranipada Chanchedi near Sarangada.
Phulbani POSCO court special judge Susant Patel awarded the jail-term and imposed a penalty of Rs 2,000.
Nayak would undergo an additional one-year jail, if he defaults on the fine, the court ruled.
According to the case diary, the incident occurred August 16, 2015 while the victim, hailing from G. Udayagiri, had gone to collect her monthly ration at Gresingia panchayat.
Family members grew apprehensive after she did not return home till late evening and lodged a missing persons’ complaint.
Later, the girl was rescued from Nayak’s house who had abducted the girl and raped her.
Based on the statements of the witnesses, the judge awarded the jail-term.
