Puri: Daita servitors Tuesday applied specially-prepared Phuluri oil to Srimandir deities who are now undergoing medication for fever at the Anasara Gruha (asylum for sick) on Srimandir premises here following the Snana Purnima (bathing) ritual June 28.
According to Srimandir tradition, Lord Jagannath and his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra undergo medication for 15 days at the Anasara Gruha. It is believed that Phuluri oil brings quick relief to the deities. Authorities of Bada Odia mutt usually supply Phuluri oil for Srimandir deities. The mutt authorities follow a complex process to prepare the aromatic oil.
Customarily, the mutt authorities add at least 14 varieties of flowers, seven herbs and other aromatic substances to sesame oil in a pot and bury it at least a year ahead of the Snana Purnima ritual. “We retrieve the buried pot on the eve of the bathing ritual. The oil was thoroughly filtered and kept in earthen pots. Daita servitors apply the aromatic oil to the deities to cure them of fever,” said Bada Odia mutt pontiff Bansidhar Das Goswami.
