Aska: A day after her marriage, district officials rescued a minor girl from the house of her in-laws in Jharpari panchayat under Dharakote block in Ganjam district Monday.
Later, the girl was handed over to the Childline officials in Berhampur, Bharati Mohapatra, child development project officer of Aska block, said.
The girl, a native of Gunupada panchayat and studying in Class X, was given in marriage to a boy studying plus two first year in Jharpari panchayat Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, Mohapatra reached Jharpari village and met the girl’s in-laws Monday. She explained them about the legal consequences of child marriage and rescued the girl. The officials of the CDPO office and Aska police accompanied Mohapatra during the rescue of the girl.
Mohapatra said over 13 marriages have been foiled since January this year and the girls have been rescued.
