Aska: In a heart-rending incident, a 22-year-old woman allegedly ended her life by consuming pesticides at Karnoli village under Aska police limits in Ganjam district Thursday night. She was identified as Alaka Swain (22), wife of Arun Swain.
Family members spotted Alaka writhing in pain and rushed her to Aska sub-divisional hospital. However, she breathed her last while undergoing treatment.
Hinjili police registered a case of unnatural death and launched a probe. While the precise reason for the death is yet to be ascertained, preliminary investigation revealed that her family was under financial duress and this forced Alaka to take the extreme step.
Sources said the family hailed from a very poor background and was under duress. Financial constraints were a major obstacle for her and she was depressed as she could not do what she wanted to. Family members did odd jobs to meet the ends meet. This might have forced the girl to take such a step, a local said.
Police seized the body and sent it for autopsy. Later, it was handed over to the family members for final rites, IIC Santosh Kumar Jena said.
