Kendrapara: Although the government has prohibited teachers of both government and private schools from resorting to corporal punishment, it is very much in practice in Kendrapara district.
In the latest incident, a Class VIII student was admitted to a local hospital in critical condition after a teacher of Kharansahi UP School beat him up Friday.
Sources said Sidartha Haldar sustained injuries after he was allegedly beaten up by Prachanda Keshari Malla alias Dinu, the Mathematics teacher, as he failed to answer a question. The boy later went to his house and started vomiting.
Sidartha was rushed to the Ramnagar PHC and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The headmaster and the Mathematics teacher went with the family of Sidartha for his treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
The father of the student, Mahendra Haldar, lodged an FIR at Jamboo marine police station against the Mathematics teacher, police said.
Ajay Kumar Parida, BEO of Mahakalapara, said the matter has come to his knowledge and he has ordered an inquiry. “Corporal punishment has been banned in the state. If the teacher is found guilty then disciplinary action would be taken against him,” Parida said.
