Sambalpur: In the wake of increasing accidents involving vehicles carrying school students in the town and across the state, the police swung into action and collected Rs 6,600 fine from 54 school vans and cases have been registered against 15 vehicles.
After the direction of Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Arora, the traffic police conducted raids at several places.
Earlier, it was directed that all educational institutions should take necessary measures in their vehicles like installing of steel grills on windows, fire extinguishers, enough space under the seats for bags and speed regulators.
After 54 school vehicles being fined on the first day of raid, it has become quite evident how the schools were flouting the guidelines with impunity.
Parents have urged the police to conduct regular raids to avoid any kind of mishap.
Notably, the police woke up to the situation only after a school van of a private school here ran into a JCB machine from the rear near the Ainthapali police station ,injuring six students travelling July 11.
